Project Description
DMC Mining Services
25,000 sq. ft.
DMC Mining Services was started in 1980 as a mining contractor. Today their business is a division of FNX Mining Company Inc. which is a wholly owned subsidiary of KGHM International.
The identified challenge of growing this Canadian based Engineering & Mining firm was the recruitment of young talent to meet their ongoing project demands. Occupying 25,000 sq.ft. of built-out space, some of which was inherited as the company grew, the ability to squeeze more staff into the space and operate effectively was an immediate problem.
WP+A was hired to prepare the needs assessment and programming document for their future growth and project mandate. After interviewing all Senior members of their office and preparing the analysis, it became quite clear the same amount of occupied space could meet their 15% immediate growth requirement.
The vision for DMC’s future business did not meet their physical space, hence the mandate was to analyze whether a phased renovation of their existing premises would be financially and operationally practical. In today’s changing business paradigm, it is very hard to function through renovations which could possibly be a year of disruption, noise, mess and associated down time. It quickly became apparent DMC needed to move to address the ability to propel the business forward on a platform of openness, collaboration, and connectivity. Team concepts and Town Hall vision sessions were established to define planning terms and functional department needs.
Westparks+Associates were part of the whole building selection process, from test fits and final planning/ design & construction implementation for the relocation to the new LEED certified building. The building choice and inherent energy efficient detail drove many of the design and wellness concepts which became integral to the DMC philosophy. Furniture Tenders were called to meet the new established standards and the completed space now has become the beacon for staff engagement in future business and the vision of their entrepreneurial president.
